Read a PDF 1.4 document with 1 page(s); the first page is 200×300.

How it works

  • Read the %PDF- header for the document version.
  • Locate the cross-reference table and trailer and resolve the catalog and page tree.
  • Read the Info dictionary and XMP packet fields that are present, marking absent fields explicitly.
  • Report the encryption and linearization flags without modifying the file.
  • Read-only: the file is never modified and nothing is uploaded.
  • Compressed object/xref streams are reported as a named limitation, never guessed.

Methodology

  1. Read the %PDF-x.y header from the real bytes; a file without it is reported as not a PDF.
  2. Locate the cross-reference table via the final startxref and resolve the trailer, catalog and page tree with bounds-checked offsets.
  3. Read the Info dictionary and XMP packet fields that are present; an absent field is shown as absent, never invented.
  4. Report a named limitation for compressed object/xref streams that a dependency-free reader cannot decode.

Usage

  1. Choose or drop a PDF.
  2. Read the version, page count and page sizes.
  3. Scan the Info and XMP fields; absent fields are marked as such.

Examples

These are examples, not current values: they use fixed inputs, while the interactive tool computes live results in your browser.

Limitations

Read-only by design

The viewer reads the classic cross-reference table, trailer and page tree from the real bytes and reports the Info and XMP fields that are present. A malformed structure is a named finding rather than a crash.

Where a PDF stores its objects in compressed streams, the reader says so plainly instead of fabricating a value.

Frequently asked questions

Does this remove metadata from my PDF?
No. It is a read-only viewer. Nothing is edited, stripped or re-written, and the file never leaves your browser.
Why is a field missing?
The PDF simply does not contain that field. The tool reports absence explicitly instead of inventing a value.
