1 us_gal equals 3.785411784 l.
How it works
- Expressed the source unit (US gallon (gal)) in litres.
- Divided by the target unit (litre (L)) expressed in litres.
- Rounded the result to 12 significant digits.
1 us_gal = 3.785411784 l- Both units measure volume, so the conversion is a single exact multiplication.
Methodology
- Express every unit as an exact factor to the litre base.
- Multiply the input by the source factor and divide by the target factor.
- Use the exact international definitions (1 in = 0.0254 m, 1 US gal = 231 in³, 1 imp gal = 4.54609 L) so no rounded factor is introduced.
- Round the result to 12 significant digits, which keeps a convert-then-convert-back operation within floating-point tolerance.
Usage
- Enter the volume value.
- Choose the source and target volume units.
- Read the converted value and the conversion formula.

Exact volume factors
Volume units derive from length units, so cubes of exact lengths stay exact: 1 ft³ = 28.316846592 L and 1 in³ = 0.016387064 L. The US liquid gallon is fixed at 231 in³ and the imperial gallon at 4.54609 L, so both customary systems convert without approximation.
Metric volume is defined from the metre, and 1 m³ = 1000 L exactly, so the metric side of the table carries no rounding at all.
Frequently asked questions
- How many litres are in a US gallon?
- Exactly 3.785411784 litres, because the US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches and the international inch is exactly 0.0254 m.
- Are US and imperial fluid ounces the same?
- No. The US fluid ounce is 1/128 of a US gallon (0.0295735295625 L) and the imperial fluid ounce is 1/160 of an imperial gallon (0.0284130625 L); the imperial one is about 4% larger.
- Why is a cubic foot 28.316846592 litres?
- Because the international foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so 1 ft³ = 0.3048³ m³ = 0.028316846592 m³ = 28.316846592 L exactly.
