1 mps equals 3.6 kph.

How it works

  • Expressed the source unit (metre per second (m/s)) in metres per second.
  • Divided by the target unit (kilometre per hour (km/h)) expressed in metres per second.
  • Rounded the result to 12 significant digits.

1 mps = 3.6 kph
  • Both units measure speed, so the conversion is a single exact multiplication.

Methodology

  1. Express every unit as an exact factor to the metre-per-second base.
  2. Multiply the input by the source factor and divide by the target factor.
  3. Use the exact definitions (1 mi = 1609.344 m, 1 nmi = 1852 m, 1 ft = 0.3048 m) so no rounded factor is introduced.
  4. Round the result to 12 significant digits, which keeps a convert-then-convert-back operation within floating-point tolerance.

Usage

  1. Enter the speed value.
  2. Choose the source and target speed units.
  3. Read the converted value and the conversion formula.

Limitations

Speed is distance over time

Every speed unit is a distance unit divided by a time unit, and both are exact here, so each factor is exact. Kilometres per hour uses 1000/3600 m/s; miles per hour uses 1609.344/3600 m/s; knots use 1852/3600 m/s.

Because the factors are exact ratios of defined lengths, a round trip (convert and convert back) returns the original value to 12 significant digits with no accumulated drift.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert km/h to m/s?
Divide by 3.6: 1 km/h = 1000 m / 3600 s = 0.277777… m/s. The multiply-by-1000 and divide-by-3600 factors are exact.
How fast is one knot?
One knot is one international nautical mile per hour, and the nautical mile is exactly 1852 m, so 1 kn = 1852/3600 m/s ≈ 0.514444 m/s ≈ 1.852 km/h.
Why is 60 mph exactly 88 ft/s?
Because 1 mile = 5280 ft and 1 hour = 3600 s; 60 × 5280 / 3600 = 88 exactly, and the international foot and mile are exact lengths.
