1 kwh equals 3600000 j.

How it works

  • Expressed the source unit (kilowatt-hour (kWh)) in joules.
  • Divided by the target unit (joule (J)) expressed in joules.
  • Rounded the result to 12 significant digits.
textSelect to copy
1 kwh = 3600000 j
  • Calories are thermochemical (4.184 J); the International Table BTU is 1055.05585262 J.

Methodology

  1. Express every unit as an exact factor to the joule base.
  2. Multiply the input by the source factor and divide by the target factor.
  3. Use the exact SI definitions (the electronvolt is exactly 1.602176634 × 10⁻¹⁹ J; 1 Wh = 3600 J) and the International Table BTU so no rounded factor is introduced.
  4. Round the result to 12 significant digits, which keeps a convert-then-convert-back operation within floating-point tolerance.

Usage

  1. Enter the energy value.
  2. Choose the source and target energy units.
  3. Read the converted value and the conversion formula.

Limitations

Exact energy factors

The joule is the SI derived unit of energy (1 J = 1 kg·m²/s²), and electrical energy follows from it: 1 Wh = 3600 J exactly. The electronvolt is fixed by the 2019 SI redefinition at 1.602176634 × 10⁻¹⁹ J.

Mechanical and thermal units are defined from exact lengths and masses: the foot-pound is 0.3048 m × 4.4482216152605 N = 1.3558179483314004 J, and the International Table BTU is the exact 1055.05585262 J.

Frequently asked questions

How many joules are in a kilowatt-hour?
Exactly 3,600,000 J: one watt is one joule per second, so one watt-hour is 3600 J and a kilowatt-hour is 1000 × 3600 J.
Is a food Calorie the same as a calorie?
No. The dietary Calorie is a kilocalorie: 1 kcal = 1000 cal = 4184 J. This tool exposes kcal and cal as separate units so no factor of 1000 is lost.
Which BTU does this converter use?
The International Table BTU (BTU_IT = 1055.05585262 J). The thermochemical BTU (1054.35026444 J) is slightly smaller and is not offered.
