A 15% tip on a 80 bill is 12, for a total of 92 (23 each for 4).

How it works

  • Multiplied the bill by the tip percentage and divided by 100.
  • Added the tip to the bill for the total.
  • Divided the total by the number of people for the per-person share.

tip = bill × tip% / 100 = 80 × 15 / 100 = 12
  • Assumes the tip is a percentage of the pre-tax bill, as most tipping conventions do.
  • This is an illustration for information only and is not financial advice.

Methodology

  1. Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100.
  2. Total = bill + tip.
  3. Per person = total ÷ party size, rounded half-up to two decimals.

Usage

  1. Enter the bill amount.
  2. Enter the tip percentage.
  3. Enter the number of people and read the tip, total and per-person share.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Practices differ. The tool computes a flat percentage of the number you enter, so enter whichever base you intend to tip on.
How is the per-person amount rounded?
The total is divided by the party size and rounded half-up to two decimals; a real bill may round differently, so treat it as a guide.
