A price of 200 with 20% off and a further 10% off ends at 144, saving 56 (28% effective).
How it works
- Applied the first discount to the original price.
- Applied the second discount to the already-discounted price (discounts compound, not add).
- Reported the total savings and the effective discount over the original price.
final = price × (1 − d1/100) × (1 − d2/100) = 200 × (1 − 20/100) × (1 − 10/100) = 144- Successive discounts multiply, so 20% then 10% is 28% off, not 30%.

Methodology
- Reduce the price by the first percentage: price1 = price × (1 − d1 ÷ 100).
- Reduce the result by the second percentage: final = price1 × (1 − d2 ÷ 100).
- Total savings = price − final; effective discount = total savings ÷ price × 100.
- Money is rounded half-up to two decimals; the effective rate to four.
Usage
- Enter the original price.
- Enter the first discount percentage.
- Optionally enter a second discount applied on top, then read the savings and final price.

Disclaimer
This calculator is an illustration for information only and is not financial advice. It does not know a retailer's pricing, coupon or tax rules; the final price at the point of sale is the authoritative one.
Frequently asked questions
- Why isn't 20% + 10% equal to 30%?
- Because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so it saves less. The two factors multiply to 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72, i.e. 28% off.
- Does the tool include tax?
- No. It applies the discounts to the price you enter; add any tax afterwards if your price is tax-exclusive.
