Over 5 value(s) the mean is 2.4, the median is 2 and the range is 3.

How it works

  • Parsed every value and ordered them from smallest to largest.
  • Summed the values and divided by the count for the mean.
  • Took the middle value (or the mean of the two middle values) for the median.
  • Counted repeats for the mode(s) and subtracted the minimum from the maximum for the range.

mean = sum / count = 12 / 5 = 2.4
  • Values are rounded half-up to 2 decimal place(s); the underlying list stays exact.
  • An empty list or a non-numeric entry is rejected rather than treated as zero.

Methodology

  1. Parse the list into finite numbers and order it.
  2. Mean = sum ÷ count; median = the middle value, or the mean of the two middle values.
  3. Mode = every value with the highest repeat count (empty when all values are distinct).
  4. Range = maximum − minimum. All displayed values are rounded half-up at the selected decimals.

Usage

  1. Enter the numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
  2. Optionally choose how many decimal places the summary should show.
  3. Run the tool and read the mean, median, mode and spread.

Examples

These are examples, not current values: they use fixed inputs, while the interactive tool computes live results in your browser.

Small list

Two modes

Decimal values

Limitations

Mean, median and mode

The mean uses every value and is affected by outliers; the median is the middle value and is robust to outliers; the mode is the most frequent value. Reporting all three makes the shape of a list visible instead of hiding it behind a single number.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when no value repeats?
There is no mode, so the mode output is empty rather than an arbitrary pick. The mean and median are still reported.
Which average does the tool show first?
The mean, because that is the everyday meaning of 'average'. The median and any mode are shown alongside it so a skewed list can be read correctly.
